Instead of just seeing the names of people already in your phone book it gives you the name associated with any number calling.

Or at least, it's supposed to. I downloaded the app on my AT&T Pantech Duo phone and had a few people call me from random phones that were not already in my phone book. Just like any other time, all I saw was the phone number calling. Fellow Download Squadder Christina Warren added the software to her phone and also didn't have any luck knowing it was me when I called her.

You can download the free three day trial or pay $24.95 for three months of service. If you're interested in this bit of technology, I'd definitely try it before signing up for the paid service. And have lots of people call you to see how it works for you. Maybe you will be more lucky than I was.

You could just do what I do. Answer calls from your friends and anyone local. Ignore the rest!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Record, edit, and mix audio on the go with MeTeoR for Windows Mobile

Filed under: Audio, Windows Mobile, Commercial, Mobile Minute
MeTeoR is a multi-track digital audio workstation (DAW) designed for Windows Mobile. It has all the basic features you'd expect from a full-fledged desktop DAW like Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, or Reaper. But it runs on Windows Mobile.

That means it's not going to be quite as fast or efficient at applying effects or mixing down large projects as the big guys. But here's a little secret. While most people use their cellphones and PDAs to do things like make phone calls and track appointments, many modern phones have more processing power than a computer from 10 years ago. And there's been decent digital audio editing software for PCs for much longer than 10 years. Now when somebody shows me a good digital video editing package for Windows Mobile I'll be surprised.

MeTeoR has a multi-track recorder plus windows for editing wave forms, mixing audio levels and pan settings, and importing audio. You can also add several effects including reverb and EQ effects. The full program costs $29.95, but there's a free trial available.

The program works with Windows Mobile 2003 and newer devices. A 400MHz or faster processor is recommended.

[via Create Digital Music]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Opera Mobile 9.5 beta released

Filed under: Windows Mobile, Mobile Minute, Beta, Browsers
Opera Mobile 9.5 beta is out today, and it's already the slickest web browser available for Windows Mobile devices. Opera has always been faster than Pocket Internet Explorer at quickly rendering web pages, but Opera Mobile 9.5 beta does a far better job of displaying web pages quickly and accurately than the last stable version, Opera Mobile 8.65.

Probably the most dramatic difference between Opera Mobile 9.5 beta and earlier versions of the software is the support for full desktop page views. In other words, you can see a complete web page pretty much exactly as you would on a desktop. Of course, most web sites aren't designed for cellphones and PDAs with screens as small as 320 x 240 pixels. So The text is pretty much unreadable in this view. But you can drag and drop the screen to find the portion you want to read and a little double click action zooms in and makes the text nice and readable. In other words, Opera Mobile 9.5 beta works a lot like the Safari browser on the iPhone.

The updated browser is also designed to make the most of your device's screen real estate. By default, Opera functions in full screen mode, with no toolbars at the top or bottom of your page. If you need to switch tabs, enter a URL, or hit the back button, you just tap on a small, semi-transparent arrow that hangs out near the bottom of your screen to bring up a menu.

Opera Mobile 9.5 is still in beta, and there are a few known issues. For example, one of the biggest improvements Opera has planned is support for Flash Lite 3 which will allow users to view YouTube movies and other Flash video content. But ActiveX is disabled in this beta release, and that means Flash plugins are disabled and embedded video streams will not play.

Opera Mobile 9.5 is available for free while in beta, and is designed for Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6. You should also make sure to install the browser to your device's main memory, as Opera reports that installing to a memory card could cause problems.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mobile carriers worst nightmare has come true, thanks to Qik

Filed under: Video, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Web services, iPhone

Live video streaming from your mobile phone is probably a mobile carrier worst nightmare simply because the amount of bandwidth video consumes. And leading that nightmare is Qik.

Simply put, Qik takes your mobile phone's built in video camera and transforms it into a webcam that connects to the Qik site where it will host live feeds of your video, as it happens. That's right, people can now watch you make a fool of yourself anywhere you go.

We were able to test the Qik service on our 3G connected Windows Mobile phone. The installation was quick and only required a few SMS messages be sent back and forth to authorize our account. Once configured just launch the application and your video will automatically appear on the Qik website. Video quality is acceptable and we only experienced slight delays due in part to our mobile connection and location.

Once you end your transmission the live video is then archived to the site for later viewing. Of course like any good site, they offer 2 different privacy settings for your feeds, public and private. At least this way not everyone in the world can see that you haven't cleaned up your room.

Currently in alpha, Qik supports a handful of Windows Mobile and Symbian phones with iPhone testing starting soon. We hope that future updates to the service will also include the ability to adjust video size and image quality. They do recommend an unlimited data plan and in the few days that we used the service we would also recommend it as well.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

FriendMobilizer: Facebook client for Windows Mobile

Filed under: Internet, Windows Mobile, Social Software, Mobile Minute

Are you scared to leave the house because you're worried that someone might poke you, turn you into a zombie or ask you to compare your taste in books while you're out and you'll miss it? FriendMobilizer is a Facebook application for Windows Mobile that gives you access to some of the most frequently used portions of Facebook when you're away from a computer.

You can use the app to:

Receive and respond to notifications and inbox messages

Browse photo albums

Write on walls

Update your status

FriendMobilizer is free but it won't work on all Windows Mobile devices. You need to have Windows Mobile 6 or higher and you need to install the program to your device's main memory, not to a storage card. You also need to provide a phone number to register, which rules out classice PDA-style devices.

[via the::unwired]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

On the go reservations with OpenTable mobile

Filed under: Windows Mobile, Web services, iPhone

OpenTable is a great way to make a reservation at a restaurant without having to speak to anyone. Their website is easy to use thanks in part to the drop down menus. So when it was time for OpenTable to release their mobile site we're glad they kept to the same, easy to use interface.

We tested the mobile site on Pocket Internet Explorer, Skyfire and iPhone's Safari and had no problems using the site on any of these browsers.

The mobile version is very straight forward. Pick a city, a restaurant, a date and time to make your reservation. And while it's quick and to the point the mobile version lacks any type of reviews or recommendations if you need a little help choosing a place to eat.

What would make this service even better would be the integration with sites like Yelp. Read a review of a restaurant and if it interest you, click on an OpenTable link to make the reservation right on the spot.

Still, given the lack of any reviews or recommended of places to try, the site is still a fun way to make a reservation while on the go.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Opera Mobile 9.5 coming July 15

Filed under: Windows Mobile, Symbian, Mobile Minute, Browsers

Opera's been working on its next generation mobile web browser for months now. And while a handful of folks have been able to get their hands on devices preloaded with Opera Mobile 9.5, most of us have been waiting <strike>im</strike>patiently to get our hands the downloadable version.

While Opera might not have much market share in the desktop browser space, the company's mobile browser is miles ahead of the browsers that come standard with most Windows Mobile, Symbian, or other cellphones. Opera Mini and Opera Mobile 8.65 are already some of the best mobile browsers around. Opera Mobile 9.5 adds Flash Lite 3 support, quicker page rendering, full page zoom, a password manager, and the ability to copy and paste text selections.

Today the Opera Mobile team announced that the first public beta version of Opera Mobile 9.5 will be available for download on July 15th. If history is anything to go by, Opera will probably charge somewhere between $20 and $30 for this browser eventually. But while in beta, the browser will be free.

[via jkOnTheRun]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Microsoft buys MobiComp, Portuguese mobile sync firm

Nobody's saying exactly what Microsoft is planning to do with MobiComp's technology, but we'd say it's a safe bet that you could eventually see some sort of data backup/synchronization software for Windows Mobile devices, perhaps as part of the Windows Live suite of web-based services.

[via Electronista]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Evernote launches into open beta, introduces premium accounts

Filed under: Utilities, Windows, Macintosh, Windows Mobile, Productivity, Web services, Social Software, iPhone
If you're not one of the 125,000 people who got a chance to try out the cross-platform note capture app Evernote during its private beta, don't despair. Evernote has launched an open beta, so now everyone can give it a try. If you were already in the beta, does this change anything for you? Yes, indeed it does: there are now two types of Evernote accounts, free and premium.

Free users keep all the features of the closed beta, with the caveat that you're now limited to 40mb a month of uploaded notes. If you're a power-user, or someone who's really sold on the Evernote lifestyle, go premium for 5 bucks a month or $45/year and get rid of that cap. Premium also comes with the option of SSL for all your uploads (for all those pictures of the enemy base, we guess) and priority access to the queue for Evernote's text-recognition features.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

AOL released updated instant messenger for Windows Mobile

Filed under: Internet, Windows Mobile, Freeware, Mobile Minute, AOL, Beta
It's been a while since AOL launched an updated version if its instant messenger for Windows Mobile. The new version is still in beta, but it has some nifty features that make it worth checking out. The first thing you'll notice is that the interface is much more attractive. But it's also more useful.

When you first login you're greeted with a buddy list. You can double tap on any contact to enter a chat window. After you've initiated a chat you can flip back to your buddy list knowing that you'll be able to see all open chats and any new messages in the sidebar that now pops up.

You can also manage your buddy list from the client. And the settings menu has a nice array of options letting you customize your notification, conversation, and privacy settings.

This beta supports devices running Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6.

[via The Boy Genius Report]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

What to expect from Mozilla's mobile Firefox web browser

Filed under: Internet, Features, Linux, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Mozilla, Browsers

Now that Firefox 3 has finally shipped, the developers at Mozilla are starting to make time for other projects. Don't get us wrong, those busy little bees are already working on Firefox 3.1, but they're also working on something entirely new: a mobile web browser.

The mobile version of Firefox, (currently codenamed Fennec -- a final name hasn't been picked yet), will use the same rendering engine as Firefox 3. In other words, any web page you can view with the desktop browser will be usable on a mobile device. That includes AJAX-heavy web applications. But nobody's pretending that you can just run Firefox 3 on a cellphone without making any changes. After all, mobile devices have small screens, slow processors, low amounts of memory, and often rely on relatively slow internet connections.

Last week we showed you a first look at a concept interface that might make its way into the final product. But it might not. So we decided to speak with Jay Sullivan, VP of Mobile for Mozilla. He gave us a run down of what's in store for Fennec, including what types of devices will be supported and when you'll be able to try the browser out for yourself.
Continue reading What to expect from Mozilla's mobile Firefox web browser

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Spb Backup 2.0: Better back for your Windows Mobile device

Filed under: Utilities, Windows Mobile, Commercial, Mobile Minute
Spb Software House has released an updated version of the company's popular Spb Backup utility for Windows Mobile phones and PDAs. While most Windows Mobile devices come with some sort of backup software, Spb has a few features that sets it apart, like the ability to create automatic scheduled backups and self-extracting backups that can be restored without installing Spb Backup first.

The new version includes:

Support for device and ROM upgrades

Smartphone version

A file-black-list for files to ignore

Spb is also including desktop software that lets you manage backups on your PC and explore the contents of backup files.

Spb Backup 2.0 is compatible with Windows Mobile 2003 and newer devices with VGA and QVGA screens. There's a 5 day free trial available, but a full license will set you back $24.95. Current users can upgrade for $9.95. If you purchased Spb Backup in the last 90 days, you can upgrade for free.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Microsoft releases SideShow beta app for Windows Mobile

Filed under: Windows, Windows Mobile, Microsoft, Mobile Minute, Beta
One of the coolest, and least frequently used, features in Windows Vista is Windows SideShow. Essentially this is a service that lets a computer running Windows Vista communicate with a handful of electronic devices like a media center remote control or an LCD screen. In other words, you can use a remote control to browse and control music playlists on your PC even when your monitor is off.

We've been expecting Microsoft to develop software that would let you use your Windows Mobile phone or PDA as a SideShow device pretty much since the first time we heard about this technology. Last year we even got a hint that a Windows Mobile client was coming. But it wasn't until this week that Microsoft finally released something, in the form of a beta release. And when we say beta, we mean it. Windows SideShow for Windows Mobile is listed as a 0.01 release.

Windows SideShow for Windows Mobile works on Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices that use the Microsoft Bluetooth stack. WiFi and 3G are not supported. If you've got a device that meets the requirements, you can use your PDA or phone to access information on your PC and control some PC functions from your device. For example, you can check the weather, read your email, control media playback, or use your device as a PowerPoint remote control.

[via the::unwired]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

StyleTap confirms plan to bring PalmOS apps to the iPhone

Filed under: Windows Mobile, Palm, Commercial, Mobile Minute, iPhone

StyleTap is an application that lets Windows Mobile users run PalmOS applications. A few months ago the makers of StyleTap announced plans to port the application to run on Symbian smartphones. They also demonstrated a version of StyleTape CrossPlatform running on an iPhone, but said the video (shown above) was just for demonstration purposes and that no decision had been made yet on whether to create an iPhone version.

Now it's official. StyleTap is coming to the iPhone. The company plans to release the application in early July. That means you'll soon be able to run over 20,000 applications designed for PalmOS on an iPhone or iPod touch.

The company said they wanted to gauge the interest in the product before deciding whether to proceed with development. The videos posted to YouTube and Viddler have been watched more than 800,000 times, so apparently there is some interest.

[via Palm InfoCenter]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Opera browser gets itself in Gear(s)

Filed under: Internet, Utilities, Windows Mobile, Google, BlackBerry
The cult favorite Opera Browser has added support for Google Gears to its desktop and mobile browsers.

Google Gears is the product that allows you to seamlessly (hopefully) integrate your web experience and your desktop experience by storing information on your computer so that you don't have to wait for your slow funky dial up to grind its own gears. Basically, it's bringing the web data to you.

Now they're going mobile with it.

Opera Mini, the mobile browser, has gained way more traction than their desktop version. Global reach and being on as many devices as possible has always been a goal of theirs. Although they don't have a huge market share with Desktop users, the people who use it are loyal beyond belief.

The loyalty comes from the fact that Opera is extremely focused on web standards, something that Microsoft has not cared about until recently with Internet Explorer. In fact, Opera sued them over it.

You'll be able to give Google Gears for mobile a shot when Opera Mini 9.5 comes out later this year.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

NetFront Browser 3.5 Concept Version for Windows Mobile updated

Filed under: Windows Mobile, Browser Tips, Mobile Minute, Beta

For a long time, NetFront was the reigning champ of Windows Mobile and PocketPC web browsers. While Pocket Internet Explorer comes standard with most Windows Mobile phones and PDAs, the browser renders pages slowly, lacks support for tabs, and doesn't handle AJAX very well. NetFront does all of those things and more. And if it weren't for the introduction of Opera Mobile a few years ago, which has the same features plus speedier page rendering, we would still heartily be recommending NetFront.

But ACCESS, the company behind the NetFront browser is working hard to keep up with Opera. This week ACCESS released the second concept version (or beta) of NetFront 3.5 for Windows Mobile. When the final version is released you'll have to pay for this browser, but while it's in beta, it's free and definitely worth checking out. Here's a short list of updates in the latest version:

Improved CPU usage

AutoCruise function has been removed

Faster page rendering

Faster page zooming

Faster scrolling

Faster switching between rendering modes (landscape or portrait, single column or desktop style)

The beta will expire on August 31, 2008. Note that you should install NetFront to your device's main memory, not to a storage card or you may experience some stability issues.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Opera Mobile 9.5: Coming soon, and probably worth the wait

Filed under: Windows Mobile, Commercial, Browser Tips

It's been a few months since Opera announced the company was working on a version of Opera 9.5 for Windows Mobile devices. And while Opera has historically been kind enough to offer public beta versions of their commercial software for download, Opera Mobile 9.5 has been pretty elusive so far. But ZDNet's Matt Miller managed to get his hands on a Windows Mobile device with Opera 9.5 preloaded, and suffice it to say he's pretty impressed. Here are some of the highlights from his review:

Smooth scrolling and panning with your finger (no stylus needed)

Context-sensitive zooming

Tabbed browsing (this has been available in every version of Opera Mobile that we're aware of)

Save pages for offline viewing

Quick page rendering

Flash Lite 3 support

Supports text selection, copy, and paste

Password manager

Save or send web images

There were some problems. Miller says he could open Google Docs spreadsheets for viewing, but not Word documents. This isn't surprising, since Opera's desktop browser has had compatibility issues with Google Docs and other Google services for a long time.

No word on when Opera will be ready to release Opera Mobile 9.5 for general use. It looks like you may be able to get purchase a phone with the software preinstalled in the not too distant future. But what we're really waiting for is the day when you can download the software and install it on any device. Opera Mobile 8.65 currently has a $24 price tag. We're assuming Opera 9.5 will eventually be available for $30 or less.

4 day weather forecasts

Search the web from the Live Search software without opening a web browser first

View maps and locations shared by other Virtual Earth users

Take addresses from your contact list and see where your friends are on a map

You can download the Live Search software by visiting m.live.com on your mobile device. If you don't want to download anything, you can still use the web-based Windows Live search engine, but the Live Search application is pretty slick and much faster than the web interface at loading maps and satellite imagery.

For years TCPMP was the reigning champ of Windows Mobile video players. The program is light weight, customizable, and can handle practically any video codec you can throw at it. But the developers of TCPMP have moved onto the commercial CorePlayer. So when we saw that there was a new version of the DivX Mobile Player, we figured we'd take it for a spin and see how it stacks up.

The application is pretty. Like really pretty. When you load it up, DivX Mobile Player will automatically detect any videos on your device which it can play. It will then create thumbnail images form the files to make your video list easier to navigate. Unfortunately this can take a while and the program doesn't respond to taps very quickly while your phone or PDA is busy grabbing thumbnails.

The video playback screen is sparse, which is a good thing if all you want to look at is the video. You get a black background, a scrollbar, two menu buttons, and your movie. You can watch your videos in fullscreen mode and get rid of the toolbar buttons. And you can adjust your colors and a few other settings. But there are some important features that are missing, like the ability to adjust your aspect ratio. Seeking also takes an excrutiatingly long time.

We're not quite ready to throw away TCPMP yet, but the DivX Mobile Player is worth keeping an eye on. The latest version features improved power management features, which should help improve battery life while watching videos. The DivX Mobile Player is also available or Symbian devices, but the latest version is 0.89. An update shoul be coming soon. You'll need to register for a free DivX account to download the mobile player.

While the Smart Touch UI is designed to run on Gigabyte's GSmart line of phones, an unofficial version of the software has been leaked and you can download it and install it on pretty much any Windows Mobile 5.0/6 device.

It's hard not to compare the Smart Touch interface to the Apple iPhone interface. Applications can be luanched by pressing large square-ish buttons, and you navigate the interface by dragging your finger across the screen. But Smart Touch does have a few innovative features up its sleeve.

When you first load the UI, you'll see just 4 icons on the bottom of the screen. But you can find more by moving your finger along the bottom of the screen to find 16 in all, including one square that you press to add new items to your menu. You can also customize your menu by dragging and dropping icons across the screen. You can easily flip back and forth between the Smart Touch interface and the default Windows Mobile UI by hitting the Today icon. To switch back, just hit the Smart Touch icon on your today screen.

You can check out a video of Smart Touch in action after the jump.
